CRACKING MEDICAL PROBLEMS WITH CONTINUOUS TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH

'THE PRIDE OF HONG KONG' PROFESSOR DENNIS LO:

I’M ONE OF THE STEPS IN A STAIRCASE, TAKING NEWCOMERS TO NEW HEIGHTS

Being regarded as the pride of Hong Kong, award-winning Professor Dennis Lo, Associate Dean (Research) of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, humbly says that he is just lucky enough to be able to sit on the shoulders of giants to look further. Since the 80s, Professor Lo has been working hard to make great breakthroughs in Science. Some of his revolutionary researches include non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and early detection of cancer with genomic sequencing technologies.

On the road of science research, it’s inevitable that one will come across obstacles. Professor Lo has his own philosophy in dealing with challenges, “Doing research is my hobby, not just a job. Although it may take many years to find out the answer, figuring things out one step at a time is an enjoyable process.” Professor Lo says that many of his inspirations come from everyday life, ‘A lot of times breakthroughs in Science take place when scientists see the connection in seemingly unrelated things.”

Professor Lo has been given many accolades, including Fellow of the Royal Society – one of the highest scientific achievements in the UK, and recently the 2021 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences - an honour renowned as the “Oscars of Science.” He encourages research teams and Hong Kong people, “Our team is very grateful and encouraged to have received these accolades as testimonies of our efforts over the past 20 years. They also show that even a small city like Hong Kong can make an impact on the world.”

Professor Lo has never stopped in his quest for solutions and research, despite his remarkable success, He has just built a new laboratory in the Science Park, helping Hong Kong to become the hub of biomedical technology of resolving more medical problems.
